ALCHEMIA Films was born from the way João Alkmim sees the world, through movement, light, people and the moments that happen when no one is performing for the camera.
Originally from Brazil and now based in Lisbon, João’s journey behind the lens has taken him through different places, cultures and stories. Over the years, filmmaking became more than documenting what was happening in front of him. It became a way of translating a feeling into something that could be kept.
And that is where ALCHEMIA comes from.
Alchemy is the art of transformation. For us, it means taking something real, a look, a movement, a place, a celebration, a few seconds that might otherwise disappear, and transforming it into something lasting.
A memory into a film.
A moment into a story.
Reality into cinema.
Our approach sits somewhere between documentary and editorial filmmaking. We don't want everything to feel staged, polished or perfect. We look for what is already there: the energy between people, unexpected gestures, imperfections, atmosphere, sound and movement.
Weddings became a natural part of that language. They contain everything we are drawn to, intimacy, beauty, chaos, fashion, family, music, places and emotions that cannot be recreated.
But ALCHEMIA was never created to exist only within weddings.
